Overview: Powerful female vocals. Electric violin. Complex bass and drum interplay. Violin bowed/ebowed guitar. What's not to love? Hemlok balances aggressive rock with odd experimentation in ways not usually seen outside of bands like Rush, Tool, and Pink Floyd. Songs are intense and yet melodic, technical and yet raw.
Hemlok was initially a 3 piece, but expanded when songs became demanding enough to have a vocalist focus exclusively on singing - Latest vocalist Janis Cimerol not only does this but provides a strong focus live with her stage presence as well. The electric violin came into play with violinist Bri Alves and is now a fiercely popular feature of their sound - Offering both biting and gentle textures it plays well against the laser-beam fuzz guitar of John McGrath and Kevin Williams' fluid basslines. Drummer Jay Myers capably roots the music with rhythms reminiscent of such players as Neil Peart, Danny Carey and Bill Bruford.
