Ifeel blessed to be a part of our WPOC family.Equally special to me are the times and events spent with my friends and colleagues at WYNY and WNBC’s Time Machine.
My favorite WYNY memory includes the late Yankee broadcaster Phil Rizzuto, known to us Yankee fans as “The Scooter.” I had the pleasure of visiting with Phil in the Yankee broadcast booth at ComiskeyPark in Chicago. WYNY was an NBC Owned and Operated radio station in New York City. It happened while I was on the air during my evening show at WYNY: I received a phone call from one of my colleagues covering the White Sox vs. Yankees game at ComiskeyPark in Chicago. He was about to chat with Phil Rizzuto. I told him to say “HI” to Phil for me. All Yankee games were broadcast on WABC radio, the ABC network’s owned and operated station in New York City. The next thing that happened was surreal: Bill, my engineer starting laughing and laughing as I started to speak on the air. His engineering buddy at WABC radio just notified him that Phil Rizzuto mentioned my name on the air at WABC. Phil spoke on the air and I quote: “Carol Mason from WYNY says hello to me.She is on the air at WYNY right now andshe is a big Yankees fan!Hi, Carol can’t wait to see you again!”Wow, this was unheard of: talking about another person on a competing network radio station! The WABC engineering staff could not believe this was happening. It was so funny and special to me!
One more to share with you from WNBC’s Time Machine:We were all close friends working daily and having fun on the radio. One evening I arrived early to work the overnight shift. The New York Ranger hockey game just ended on the air and Jim Collins was in our studio waiting for sports host Dave Sims to appear.Dave was no where to be found! So, there we were Ranger game ending and no Dave Sims. Jim Collins opened our microphone and over 50,000 watts on the air said this: “Dave Sims is not here.We can’t find him.And because I know SQUAT about sports, we present to you a special edition of……THE TIME MACHINE!”Jim played all of our Time Machine jingles on the air and started doing a special Time Machine show.It was hilarious to say the least! Our General Manager Peg Kelley called laughing and couldn’t stop laughing on the telephone. One of our WNBC sales people thought it was a publicity joke. No, this was real.Jim and I had a great time playing hits from the sixties, seventies and even the fifties. It was one of the special moments that will forever remain in my memory!
Life is special and wonderful. Each day is an adventure. Here’s wishing you joy and happiness in all that you do.
All the Best,
Carol Mason

Orioles vs. Yankees
Sunday 04-12-2009 7:03pm ET
Born and bred in New York, I admit it; I am a diehard Yanks fan. I remember attending ball games at the old Yankee Stadium and the thrill of being a part of the “House That Ruth Built!” The Bronx Bombers played an exciting role in my childhood, even to this day.
I’ve heard most New York jokes and New York puns—“tirdy-tird and tird" (New York pronunciation for Thirty Third and Third), “Chawklat MilK” (chocolate milk) and “Wawk the Wawk ova thair” (Walk the Walk over there).
As a transplanted New Yorker here in Baltimore, I am also a huge O’s fan too! I always root and cheer for the Birds EXCEPT when they play the Yankees!
Here’s wishing both the Orioles and the Yankees a successful baseball season. May the best team win!

Coleman and Toliver comprise two of the 10-member All-America Team, which is voted upon by WBCA-member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions. A perfect finale for two great careers at University of Maryland College Park.
Thank you, Kristi and Marissa for four wonderful years at Comcast Center!
Can't wait until the basketball Terps return next year!
Do you remember these four greats? They were called “The Highwaymen.”
Wednesday 03-18-2009 7:14pm ET
The Highwaymen was one of the most powerful groups in music history. All four were kings of the Outlaw Sound and as such, influenced many of our contemporary singers today. At the time Kris Kristofferson was at the height of his movie career but as Kris affectionately remembers, this is what he loved doing most, singing and performing music, especially with his close friend Johnny Cash. Who can forget when the late Johnny Cash joined Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and the late Waylon Jennings for this Jimmy Webb song, “Highwayman.”
The Famous New York Egg Cream
Sunday 03-15-2009 8:39am ET
In Baltimore we have our legendary Maryland Crabs. New York City owns the Egg Cream.
Have you ever tasted a New York Egg Cream? We spent time in the city and had to have an Egg Cream!
This old-time New York thirst-quencher is sweet and full of fizz. Despite its name, the egg cream contains neither eggs nor cream.
The basic ingredients are milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup. It is traditionally made in a small Coke-style glass. Years ago Egg creams became so popular that author, Elliot Willensky, wrote in his book titled When Brooklyn Was the World: 1920-1957, "a candy store minus an egg cream, in Brooklyn, New York at least, was as difficult to conceive of as the Earth without gravity."
Try it for yourself:
Approximately 1/2 cup cold whole milk 1 cup bottled seltzer or club soda 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
Pour 1/2 cup of cold milk into a tall soda glass. Add seltzer or club soda to within 1 inch of the top of the glass; stir vigorously with a long spoon (this will cause it to become white and bubbly with a good head of foam).
Very gently pour 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup slowly down the inside of the glass; briskly stir with a long spoon only at the bottom of the glass where the chocolate sits. The resulting drink should have a dark brown bottom and a 1-inch high pure white foam top (if you mix it too much, the foam disappears).
NOTE: Do not let Egg Cream sit for a long period of time. If you wait 5 minutes or more it will go flat. ENJOY!

Friday 03-06-2009 12:57pm ET
Jillian Harris Jillian Harris, a 29-year-old interior designer from Alberta, Canada, has been named ABC’s new “Bachelorette.” Harris was the third-place finisher on the most recent season of “The Bachelor” — sent home by Jason Mesnick who made headlines for the show by breaking up with his original first choice Melissa Rycroft to make things work with second choice Molly Malaney.
BACHELOR HOST, CHRIS HARRISON
Chris Harrison is very excited to have Jillian Harris on board for the next bachelorette: “There was one girl this season who really captured America’s heart,” Harrison said. “It was a pretty easy decision. I think it always speaks volumes about our show when the good people like Jillian decide to come back.Jillian is the best. We couldn't have found a more down to earth, funny, thoughtful woman. I hope she finds what she's looking for but be warned– even if she does, we just learned it may not happen exactly how you like!" Chris Harrison himself is happily married with two children.
