You can probably think of more than one award-winning movie that is hard to watch. There’s Schindlers List, Mississippi Burning and Shawshank Redemption just to suggest a few. I think 12 Years A Slave will win some oscars at the 2014 Academy Awards. It is also very hard to watch. So if you’re looking for a light up-lifting night of entertainment this should not be your pick. The film is based on the true story of Solomon Northrup a free man living in New York with his wife and two children when he gets tricked and sold into slavery. His family doesn’t know what’s happened to him. For 12 years Solomon works as a slave on various plantations in Louisiana. This is the 1800’s and there are really no rules about how a master is to treat a slave. There are some parts of our history that we would rather not relive, think or talk about anymore. The treatment and the reality of slavery is one of those parts. This film is well written and the cast does a great job. Should you go and see it, you will think about what you saw for a long time.
