Somewhere along the way, Judd Apatow lost track of how to end a movie. The man behind such hysterical comedies like 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up is back with This Is 40. I had high hopes for this movie because of the cast, but it didn't do it for me.
The film's first problem is that it's way too long. It clocks in at around 130 minutes. No comedy needs to be that long. It's second fatal flaw is that there is no clear plot. This Is 40 is thrown together like a jigsaw puzzle that's missing pieces. We get to see these fleeting moments in the life of a family but there doesn't appear to be any major factor tying them all together. There's a scene where we get to see Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Desi (Megan Fox) hanging at a club with members of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. Why? That's about 10 minutes Apatow could have chopped off. There are a lot of random guest appearances like that. I started to get the feeling This Is 40 was just an excuse for Apatow to make a movie that included a bunch of his famous friends as if he's trying to say, "Look at how cool I am!"
Now that I've complained enough, there are definitely some great moments. I wont ruin any of the lines for you, but I promise you will laugh if you go see it. You'll just be bored out of your mind in the downtime between those fleeting instances. A bunch of one-liners don't make a great movie. I don't think This Is 40 is worth your hard earned cash. At the most I'd say wait to rent it for a buck.
